Do your hub-mounted racks work with oversized axles?

We work with €œThe Robert Axle Project” to fit racks on bikes with 12mm rear axles. There are many different axle styles and so we source the different variations from them. We have designed a Fit Kit to adapt our racks to their axles. Both the Pioneer or Sherpa frames can work with specific Kits for the Robert Axles. We have front rack solutions for bikes with 15mm Thru-Axle AND Fox/Rockshox suspension forks only.

Road Brakes ImageI have a road bike without eyelets, which rack would you recommend?

The best solution for you is our Sherpa model. It comes in front and rear models. Here is a picture of the Sherpa Rear on a road bike without eyelets and a typical road-caliper brake. We recommend the Sherpa over the Pioneer in this case because the Sherpa has a narrower profile and tends to look better on a road bike. Notice how the extension bars attach directly to the seat stays with a set of rubber coated clamps.

Brake boss mounting bracket. How do the racks attach to the brake bosses?

Our extension bars attach to a pair of angled brackets that fit right under the head of the screw that holds on your brake arms. You do not remove or alter your brake arms during installation. The brake arms can move freely with absolutely no change in performance. (Our bracket is only .125in. thick). See picture to the right.

What is the difference between the Sherpa and the Pioneer?

The main difference is in style as well as function. The Pioneer looks much more aggressive with its larger overall size and load-carrying capacity. The Sherpa is more reserved, with a minimalist look. Pioneer is available as a front and a rear rack.

Do you have to buy an extra-long quick-release skewer to fit with your lower mounting brackets?

No! A longer quick release skewer is included with each rack for 5mm AXles. For 12mm Rear or 15mm front a separate axle is required based on the specifications of your bike.(Pioneer, Sherpa, and Ultimate Lowrider.)

I have a hardtail with eyelets, do Old Man Mountain racks work with this?

Yes! We are known for our axle-mounting designs however, the White Rock is perfect for bikes that have a lower eyelet. It also mounts to your brake-bolts, which is a much more stable and hassle-free point of attachment than the upper eyelets used by other racks. If your bike does not have "V" or canti-brake bosses, simply attach our extension bars to your seat stays with a pair of vinyl-coated, "C" clamps.

Will my pannier bags work with your racks?

Yes! All of our racks use 1/2 diameter tubing for the Support legs. The oversize tubing creates a stronger yet light weight rack capable of taking all the abuse you can put it through. We do have used 10mm in the areas where Pannier Racks will hook on since most hooks do not adapt to a 1/2 diameter.

Since your f/s compatible racks are attached at the QR, how do I remove the wheel if I have a flat?

Simply release the QR lever and completely remove the skewer. The rack will usually just remain seated in the axle dropouts, allowing you to remove the wheel and make your repair.

Do your hub-mounted racks work with oversized axles?

Do you make racks for fat bikes?
Yes! We make hub-mounted and lower eyelet-mounted options of our Phat Sherpa rack. We make them for both 135-170mm spacing and >190mm spacing. Some popular bike models are listed on our site with their own Phat Sherpa rack, but we fit a wide variety of fatbikes other than the ones listed. Call or email us with any questions!

Do your racks work with Full-Suspension Mountain bikes?
Yes! Our Sherpa, Pioneer, and Ultimate Lowrider racks are hub-mounted systems, which place the weight on the axle; it does not put any extra load on the shocks or require you to change your suspension setup.

My bike has Disc-Brakes, will your racks still fit?
Yes! Our Pioneer and Sherpa models are available in options for hydraulic disc and mechanical disc.

My bike doesn't have V-Brake bosses or eyelets, can I still use an Old Man Mountain rack?
Yes! Depending on the size of your seat stays (the frame tubes that go from your seat to the rear axle) or your fork legs, you would order your rack “with clamps”. Simply wrap a string around the tube and measure it and specify the size you need when you order. We also have a road caliper bracket available for bikes with road caliper brakes.

Are OMM band clamps safe to use on carbon?
Yes! Our clamps are made from a rubber-coated, thin metal band, so you can flatten and reshape them to the tube profile. This allows even pressure distribution, unlike U-bolts that point load the carbon. Another thing to keep in mind is that the clamps aren’t weight-bearing; they are meant to steady the rack front to rear. Our racks are designed so that the weight load is on the axle mount. For extra protection and shimming, we recommend Velox cloth rimstrip tape.

Do your racks come with any kind of warranty and how about the return policy?
All racks have a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects in craftsmanship to the original owner. Here at Old Man Mountain we take pride in the quality of our products and in how we treat our customers...so if you feel you have an issue, just give us a call or email us and we'll get everything straightened out, ASAP. What is the difference between the Sherpa and the Pioneer?
The main difference is in style as well as function. The Pioneer looks much more aggressive with its larger overall size and separate rails for panniers. The Sherpa is more reserved, with a minimalist look.

My bike has lower eyelets, do you make a rack that can mount to these?
Our Sherpa and Pioneer models can also come as lower eyelet-mounted versions.

Will I have enough heel clearance with my pannier bags?
The top platform of our rack is a pretty standard length, but the geometry has the rack sitting back quite a bit more than most generic racks do, which results in better heel clearance.

Since your f/s compatible racks are attached at the QR, how do I remove the wheel if I have a flat?
Simply release the QR lever and completely remove the skewer. The rack will usually just remain seated in the axle dropouts, allowing you to remove the wheel and make your repair.
